Voyage Planning Service Technical Report Vol.2
In order to enhance our service quality, Weathernews has introduced a high resolution tidal current forecast in the Malacca Strait, Lombok Strait, and Vitiaz Strait. This enables improvements of ship speed simulation, ETA estimation, RPM recommendation, and weather analysis due to more realistic estimation of sea conditions.
- High resolution tidal current forecast is applied over the following three (3) designated areas: Malacca Strait, Lombok Strait, and Vitiaz Strait.
1) Upgrade characteristics
- Areas where the tidal current forecast is applied the Malacca Strait, Lombok Strait, and Vitiaz Strait, as well as the previously released English Channel and Gibraltar Strait.
- Tidal current forecast is based on a high-resolution model. Spacial and temporal resolutions are as follows for the newly added areas:
Malacca Strait: 0.008 degrees, 3 hour intervals, for 6 days
Lombok Strait/Vitiaz Strait: 0.04 degrees, 3 hour intervals, for 6 days
Areas where the new high resolution tidal current forecast is applied
2) Effects of Upgrade
The upgrade enables a more detailed estimation of sea conditions. The new simulation including tidal current forecast can more accurately estimate ship speed and ETA calculation compared with the ocean current data only.
