Weathernews held a Round Table Discussion “Polar Routeing - From Dream to Reality” as a part of our GLOBAL Content Fair in Weathernews JAPAN on the 15th of May, 2008. Weathernews declared it would launch the Global Ice Center and start to operate it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in order to ensure safe navigation for the polar route.

Weathernews has held Polar Routeing Round Table Discussions for the past two years (November 2006 and 2007) and was graced by visits from major shipping companies and polar ice and aerospace engineering specialists. This time, as a third discussion, Weathernews had a great opportunity to invite shipping companies EVERGREEN MARINE Corp., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, NYK Lines and the head of the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University.
Many active arguments and questions for the realization the Polar Routeing were made by participants. Discussing the possibilities of innovative route discovery, Weathernews declared that they would launch the Global Ice Center in order to create global / unified ice data and provide this information to maritime companies. The prime goal will be to create safe polar routes.
From “Dream” to “Reality”, Weathernews supports shipping companies that share with us the dream of creating safe and economic polar routes, something no others routeing company has ever aspired to.
