Weathernews provides OptimumPort Operation Service (OPO) to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.
- Severe Weather Risk Communication Service to all Vessels in Port -
Tokyo, February 7, 2007－WEATHERNEWS INC. (Location: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President:Chihito Kusabiraki), the Global Full Service Weather Company with Service and Support bases in 16 countries, has begun its Optimum Port Operation (OPO) Service to Mitsui O.S.KLines. Specifically, OPO is a risk communication service for ships berthing in port or anchoring off port as a way of ensuring the physical safety of those ships by warning them of the approach of severe conditions such as typhoons, storms and tsunami. This service will support Mitsui O.S.K Lines’ Safe Operation Support Centre (SOSC), which opened on February 1, 2007.
Since its establishment in 1986, WEATHERNEWS INC. has provided shipping companies the world over with Oceanrouteing services.Furthermore, the information it provides is not limited to just ships at sea; as part of the Total Fleet Management Service, it includes information necessary for increasing safety and scheduling efficiency as a key function of Fleet Management.With the rapid growth in ship numbers and increase in the occurrence of severe weather patterns,shipping companies around the world are now faced with a dramatic need for safe management of not only vessels en route, but also vessels in port.
In response to these market needs,WEATHERNEWS INC. has established an important new service: ‘Optimum Port Operation’ (OPO). This new and cutting-edge service is being fully utilized by Mitsui O.S.K Lines’ SOSC on a 24 x 7 basis for their entire fleet.
The OPO service utilizes maritime 
communication satellites to regularly keep track of the positions and status of all ships throughout the world.The OPO service also makes alerts about approaching tropical depressions such as typhoons or violent low-pressure systems along with specific details of winds and significant waves expected. The information is simultaneously communicated to ship operators and to those vessels in port that are in the path of the approaching storms.This new service, combined with the information shared within each shipping company,allows Masters and vessel Operators to take more effective preventive measures to ensure the safety of their ships at berth or anchoring.
