At Weathernews, we have built our aviation business around the needs of our airline partners. Going beyond providing just weather information, the company comprises risk communicators and risk analysts who partner with the airlines, understand their individual businesses, and explain the impact that the weather has or can have on their operations and on their bottom lines.
Using state-of-the-art technology, our aviation weather experts help clients make daily decisions based on how the weather will impact their flights, hubs and overall operations. From flight-by-flight decisions, like Minimum Equipment Lists (MEL) and alternate airports, to hub and system integrity decisions, like ground delays and equipment scheduling, our clients rely on Weathernews to deliver a complete aviation solution that proactively supports the decision-making needs of various airline employees.
This solution includes live, interactive weather briefings with experienced meteorologists and risk communicators, weather information products detailing commercial-aviation-centered forecasts, and easy-to-read weather graphics. These proactive decision-support services enable airline staff to make more sound decisions, faster and with more confidence than before. In addition, through partnerships in the weather and aviation industries as well as with its airline clients, Weathernews is continually researching and developing new products for pilots, flight crews, dispatchers and other airline staff members.

In 1994, Weathernews began supplying aviation weather services to commercial airlines and general aviation companies. JAS, Thai Air, FinnAir and British Airways were a few of our clients who took advantage of those services that included synoptic discussions, upper air briefings and enroute briefings. These discussions focused on departure weather, enroute weather with an emphasis on CAT, and landing forecasts, as well as aviation hazards such as icing, mountain waves and thunderstorms.
Today, commercial airlines face even fiercer competition as companies vie for fewer passengers.
Cost reduction initiatives cover the aviation landscape, major staff reductions have become common, and the industry's economic future is more uncertain than ever. In combination, these factors have resulted in a serious exploration and consideration of alternative operating means.
In response to the industry's need for new, more efficient ways to operate, Weathernews has built a world-class Operations Center housing our state-of-the-art Aviation Service Center in Norman, Oklahoma. The center takes Weathernews' aviation services to the next level -- providing a full-service offering, including risk communications and decision-support services for nearly every person within an airline's operations from flight dispatchers and AOC managers to pilots and airport managers.

One of Weathernews' primary goals is to actively foster public-private partnerships in the weather community in order to build and deliver more advanced and innovative meteorological services to commercial industries, including aviation. Progressing towards that goal, Weathernews opened our office in Norman , OK in 2002 to become more integrated with the meteorological institutions, resources and expertise located there.
The company also made a significant gift to the OU School of Meteorology to establish an endowed faculty chair in applied meteorology. The purpose of the chair is to provide for continued innovation in applied meteorological research that will benefit both individuals and businesses that possess significant weather exposure, such as airlines.
The Weathernews Chair will help OU identify and then carry out research activities whose applications can be commercialized on the global scale. Weathernews will work collaboratively with the university to develop those applications into advanced products and services for the aviation industry. As a result of this collaboration, companies will be able to better optimize their operations and structure to manage the impact weather can have on their businesses and thus their bottom lines. |
