Temperatures to rise as upper-level high pressure extends over Taiwan

On October 20, an upper-level high-pressure system and warm air are expected to combine to raise temperatures across Taiwan. Near 5,000 m, a ridge of high pressure is extending more prominently than in surrounding areas, making cloud formation less likely below. In addition, warm air of +21°C or higher is spreading from the Taiwan Strait near 1,500 m, continuing to warm areas closer to the surface and making daytime temperatures more likely to rise.

Outlook for major cities

The upper-level high-pressure system and warm air are expected to persist during this period. Sunshine is also expected to strengthen in Taipei, where temperatures are forecast to reach 35°C on the 20th, with humidity at 54%. The heat is expected to ease on the 21st as clouds spread and sunshine weakens, with temperatures forecast to fall to 30°C. Highs are forecast at 33°C in Taichung, 32°C in Hualien and 31°C in Kaohsiung, all below 35°C.

People are advised to limit outdoor activities as much as possible during the day. Drink fluids regularly and take steps to cope with the heat, such as improving ventilation indoors.
